Former national football team Captain Mamunul Islam is bidding farewell to professional football after a two-decade of his career.
The 37-year-old midfielder will play his last match for Fortis FC against Rahmatganj in the Bangladesh Football league (BFL) at the Kings Arena today.
On this occasion, Mamunul spoke at a press conference organised at Fortis Club House on Thursday.
Regarding his achievements and gains from football, Mamunul said, ‘I have gained a lot from football.
Name, fame, money, trophies, achievements – many things. Now it’s just the turn of repaying the debt.’
Mamunul started his professional football career in 2005 with Brothers Union Club. He made his international debut in the national team jersey in 2008.
He was also the captain of the Bangladesh football team from 2013 to 2016. Mamunul played 67 matches for the country and scored three goals.
One of Mamunul’s achievements was winning gold at the SA Games for the Under-23 team on home soil in 2010. He last wore the national team jersey in 2020 against Burundi.
His career in domestic football spans more than two decades. Mamunul played for 11 clubs, has won three league titles and two Federation Cups for Sheikh Jamal.
He has also won a league title for Indian Super League (ISL) club Atletico de Kolkata (ADK).
After playing for traditional clubs like Dhaka Abahani and Dhaka Mohammedan.
He signed for Fortis FC towards the end of his career.
Mamunul has won 16 trophies throughout his career, but two regrets from his national team and club career as his shortcomings in his farewell speech, ‘My biggest regret is not being able to become a champion in SAFF Football.
And it is also regret that I did not get playing time despite being a member of the champion team in ADK. These two regrets will remain as long as I live.’
Mamunul will end his playing career by playing against last match Rahmatganj today.
However, the footballer has hinted that his experience in domestic football could be used in other roles in the future.
