River water surge due to heavy rains

The water level of all rivers and streams in the Sylhet region is increasing due to the mountain inundation coming down from upstream India and heavy rains.

The water level has already exceeded the danger level in the Manu River in Moulvibazar. The water level in the Surma, Kushiyara, Piain and Sari-Goain rivers in Sylhet and Surma rivers at various points in Sunamganj has increased, but it is still below the danger level.

The Water Development Board (PAUBO) reported this information on Wednesday.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC), flooding has started in Moulvibazar, one of the four districts of Sylhet division.

Flooding conditions may arise in the lower areas of Sylhet, Habiganj and Sunamganj districts.
The current rain may continue for at least five more days. According to the Sylhet Meteorological Office, 127.2 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in 24 hours from 6 am on Monday to 6 am on Tuesday.

At the same time, Sunamganj received 22 millimeters of rain. This continuous rain is accompanied by the surge coming down from upstream due to heavy rains in the Meghalaya region of India, increasing the water level of the rivers.

According to PAUBO data, water has increased at various points of the Surma, Kushiyara, Piyain and Sari-Goain rivers in Sylhet. Although the danger level at the Kanaighat point of the Surma river is 12.75 centimeters, the water level was 5.88 centimeters at 9 am on Tuesday. The water level at the Sylhet point is also far below the danger level.

On the other hand, in the last 24 hours in Sunamganj, the water level of the Surma river has increased by about 50 centimeters at the Sholaghar point of the municipal town. Currently, the river water is flowing 169 centimeters below the danger level there.

The Flood Forecasting Center said that the water level of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may increase for the next three days. The Kushiyara river may cross the danger level on the third day. As a result, floods may occur in the low-lying areas adjacent to the haors of these districts.

It is also being said that the water of the Khowai and Juri rivers in Habiganj and Moulvibazar may rise rapidly and flow above the danger level in the next 24 hours. As a result, a new flood situation may arise in Habiganj district.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is also continuing in the Cherrapunji and Meghalaya regions of India.
Sylhet Water Development Board Executive Engineer Deepak Ranjan Das said that it is normal for the river water to rise gradually due to rainfall and upstream inflow during the pre-monsoon season.

Although the water of all the rivers is currently below the danger level, the water may increase further as rainfall continues upstream.

Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howlader said that rainfall may continue upstream and in the country in the next few days. However, he expressed hope that the water situation will also return to normal if the weather conditions improve.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, the water of the Manu River flowing above Moulvibazar is flowing one and a half centimeters above the danger level.
