OC accused of taking Tk 5 lakh bribe from woman in Mirpur

Allegations have surfaced that a woman businessperson was subjected to “financial exploitation” by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station while seeking legal assistance in the capital. The complaint has now reached senior levels of the police administration.

OC Mohammad Golam Azam of Mirpur Model Police Station has been accused of taking Tk 5 lakh in two installments from a businesswoman, Shamsad Ara Sathi, allegedly in exchange for filing a case and ensuring action against accused persons.

The victim submitted a written complaint to the Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on April 26.

In her complaint, she stated that she had gone to Mirpur Model Police Station over a dispute related to occupiers of Swadhin Bangla Market in Mirpur-1. Instead of receiving assistance, she was allegedly made to wait at the police station for 4–5 consecutive days and subjected to mental pressure.

She further alleged that on December 27 last year, two sub-inspectors — SI Hasan and SI Tariqul — acting on behalf of the OC, informed her that officials from different levels, including the assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner, needed to be “managed.”

According to her claim, she first paid Tk 2.5 lakh on December 27, and the next day she personally handed over another Tk 2.5 lakh to the OC following repeated calls.

She has demanded an investigation into CCTV footage of the police station and call records as evidence.

However speaking to the New Nation, OC Golam Azam rejected the allegations, saying the complainant had previously filed multiple cases against former OCs and often submits complaints when her demands are not met. He said police cannot act on personal claims regarding market control or rent collection without court orders.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mirpur Division) Md Mostak Sarkar told The New Nation he had heard about the complaint but declined to comment, adding that appropriate action would be taken if evidence is found during investigation.
