Dinesh Trivedi new Indian envoy to Bangladesh

India has appointed senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dinesh Trivedi as its next High Commissioner to Bangladesh, signalling a politically significant shift in its diplomatic approach towards Dhaka.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the decision in a press release issued on Monday, stating that Trivedi will soon take up his assignment in Dhaka.

“Shri Dinesh Trivedi, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” MEA said.

He will succeed the incumbent envoy, Pranay Verma, a career diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service.

Trivedi’s appointment stands out as India traditionally assigns seasoned IFS officers to such high-profile diplomatic posts.

His selection suggests New Delhi’s intent to bring political experience directly into its engagement with Bangladesh at a time when regional dynamics remain sensitive.

A veteran politician, Trivedi has held several key positions in the Indian government.

He served as Railway Minister under the United Progressive Alliance and also held the post of Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.

Over the years, he built a reputation as a measured and articulate voice in Parliament, with experience spanning both governance and policy.

Trivedi began his political career with the Trinamool Congress, joining the party in 1998 and emerging as one of its prominent parliamentary figures.

However, in May 2021, he switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking a significant turn in his political journey.

His move came during his first year of a six-year term in the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament.

At the time, Trivedi publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and drew attention for his remarks during the emotional farewell to veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in Parliament earlier that year.

Fluent in Bengali despite hailing from a Gujarati business family, Trivedi is seen as well-equipped to engage with Bangladesh’s political and cultural landscape.

His long association with politics in West Bengal is expected to give him an added advantage in navigating bilateral issues that often have strong regional dimensions.

His appointment underscores India’s continued focus on strengthening ties with Bangladesh, a key partner under its “Neighbourhood First” policy.

The two countries share a border stretching over 4,000 kilometres and maintain close cooperation in trade, connectivity, and security.
At the same time, the relationship is not without challenges.

Longstanding issues such as water-sharing agreements and border management continue to require careful diplomatic handling.

Trivedi’s political background is expected to play a role in addressing these sensitive matters through sustained dialogue.

Observers say his posting reflects New Delhi’s broader effort to deepen political engagement with Dhaka, particularly at a time when regional stability and strategic cooperation are gaining prominence in South Asia.

Trivedi is expected to assume charge in Dhaka shortly.
Meanwhile, on April 10, MEA appointed Shri Pranay Verma as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union.

He is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Verma was appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh in July 2022.
