Barishal hosts ‘Climate Storytelling’

Marking International Earth Day, a programme titled “Climate Storytelling” was held in Barishal on Wednesday, bringing together local elders, youths, students and representatives from different social groups to share experiences of environmental and climate change.

The session aimed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the real-life impacts of climate change while highlighting the importance of local knowledge and lived experiences in understanding environmental shifts.

Participants shared personal observations and memories of how weather patterns and the local ecosystem have changed over the decades.

They noted significant differences in the duration of seasons, rainfall patterns, river and canal water flow, and biodiversity.

They said that the once predictable cycle of seasons has been replaced by irregular rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and an increase in the frequency of natural disasters, affecting daily life and livelihoods.

Speakers at the programme said that the experiences of older generations can serve as a valuable learning resource for present and future generations in understanding climate change impacts at the local level.

The event was organised by Prantojon, Avas, Aarohi, Silt, and the Barishal Divisional Environment and Public Safety Forum, in collaboration with the Just Energy Transition Network Bangladesh (JETnet-BD).

Organisers emphasised that effective action against climate change requires participation from all sections of society, adding that such initiatives play a crucial role in building awareness and strengthening community-level responses.

Local dignitaries, representatives of social organisations and students also attended the event.
