Measles claims 5 more lives in 24hrs

A measles outbreak continues to spread across Bangladesh, with five more children dying from suspected infections in the 24 hours leading up to 8 AM Wednesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

During the same period, 1,229 new suspected measles cases were reported nationwide, the DGHS bulletin said.

The total number of suspected measles cases since March 15 has reached 27,164, while confirmed cases stand at 3,934. In the last 24 hours alone, 129 new cases were confirmed.

Since the outbreak began, 17,998 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalized, and 14,892 have recovered and been discharged.

Although no deaths from confirmed measles were reported in the past 24 hours, DGHS data shows that 38 people have died from confirmed measles since March 15. In total, 190 deaths have been recorded among suspected cases during the same period.

Dhaka Division has reported the highest number of suspected cases, with 12,058 infections. Of these, 2,634 cases have been confirmed as measles.

Health officials continue to monitor the outbreak as infections remain widespread across the country.
