Warrant issued against Hamza
A court in Sirajganj issued an arrest warrant against Kushtia-3 Member of Parliament Mufti Amir Hamza.
The order was given on Tuesday after a hearing, over allegations that he made controversial remarks without evidence regarding the transfer of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kushtia.
Earlier, on March 27, while speaking before the Friday sermon at Haripur Jame Mosque in Kushtia, Amir Hamza claimed that the current DC had spent around Tk 20–30 crore to secure the posting. A video of his remarks spread widely on social media, triggering nationwide controversy.
Following the incident, a legal notice was sent to the MP on April 13. The notice stated that such baseless remarks had damaged the image of the government. He was given seven days to disclose the name of the person to whom the alleged money was paid and provide supporting evidence. However, he failed to do so within the given time.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Abdul Majid, said that making such serious allegations against a senior government official without evidence is punishable by law, especially coming from a responsible Member of Parliament.
He added that the remarks not only defamed a public official but also created confusion among the public. For this reason, the court decided to issue the arrest warrant.
