NCRI'S DEPUTY DIRECTOR KILLING: Five arrested in contract attack
In a chilling case of contract killing, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-1) have arrested five individuals over the brutal attack on Dr. Ahmed Hossain, deputy director of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) and Hospital in the capital.
RAB Headquarters Deputy Director (Media) Major Lutfor Rahman Hadi confirmed the detention around 11:45am on Tuesday (April 21).
RAB sources said that the attack was carried out by hired assailants for just Tk 20,000, underscoring how a premeditated act of violence was executed for a small payment.
The arrestees have been brought under the law within 24 hours of this brutal attack. Among those arrested, Karim has prior cases related to violence against women in Sylhet and Comilla, while Kalu faces a case under the Explosives Substances Act filed with Banani Police Station.
The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday during coordinated raids across different areas of the capital. Later in the afternoon, Wing Commander M. Z. M. Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing.
According to the Commanding Officer of RAB-1, Shariful was detained from Dakkhin Khan, Arifuzzaman from Gulshan, and the remaining suspects from the Badda area.
Investigators believe that two to three assailants directly carried out the attack.
Following the incident, a hospital administrative officer filed a case with Banani Police Station, naming eight to ten individuals as accused.
RAB officials said the attack stemmed from an internal dispute between two groups over securing a hospital tender. Investigations have identified a man named Rubel, currently residing in Malaysia, as the mastermind who coordinated the attack using a foreign phone number. Karim is believed to have acted on his behalf within the country.
Earlier, the attack took place on Monday in the Banani area, when unidentified assailants assaulted Dr. Ahmed Hossain while he was returning home after office hours.
