National Cancer Hospital’s DD stabbed in Gulshan
Dr. Ahmad Hossain (50), Deputy Director (DD) of the National Cancer Research Institute and Hospital, was attacked on his way home after work in Gulshan, the capital. Two unidentified attackers stabbed him and fled the scene. He is currently receiving treatment at the Cancer Hospital itself.
According to police and hospital sources, the attack took place on Monday evening in a lane behind the old BRAC University campus in Gulshan. Two young men aged between 20 and 25 came from behind and launched a sudden attack on Dr. Ahmad Hossain. The attackers stabbed him in his right hand and back and quickly fled the scene. He was later rescued and promptly admitted to the National Cancer Hospital.
Upon receiving news of the attack, Health Minister Sardar Shakhawat Hossain went to the hospital at around 7:30 in the evening to inquire about the injured doctor. He later told journalists that swift action would be taken to arrest those involved in the attack.
Law enforcement agencies will investigate whether there is any tender-related or other matter behind it. He also gave assurances regarding ensuring the safety of doctors at that time.
Meanwhile, Banani Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Md. Mehedi Hasan told journalists that a syndicate had been threatening Dr. Ahmad Hossain from foreign numbers for quite some time to award tenders. Preliminary investigation suggests that he was stabbed from behind with the intention of intimidating him on his way home after duty.
Police have stated that operations have begun to identify and arrest the attackers. Efforts are underway to apprehend those involved with the help of modern technology, including collecting CCTV footage from around the scene of the incident.
