US envoy visits Lalbagh Fort
US Special Envoy Charles Harder and Deputy Chief of Mission Megan Bouldin visited Lalbagh Fort, highlighting continued cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States in preserving cultural heritage.
The visit, hosted by the Department of Archaeology Bangladesh, included a tour of key sections of the 17th-century Mughal complex, including the historic Hammam Khana.
Officials said the Hammam Khana, a Mughal-era bathhouse, has been restored with support from the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation as part of global efforts to safeguard significant heritage sites.
During the visit, Harder stressed the importance of preserving historical landmarks to help future generations stay connected to their roots. He noted that the restoration reflects a shared commitment to protecting cultural identity and promoting awareness of history.
The delegation was also briefed on ongoing conservation work and the challenges of maintaining centuries-old structures amid rapid urbanisation. Officials highlighted the need for sustained international cooperation to ensure effective preservation.
A major historical landmark in Dhaka, Lalbagh Fort continues to attract thousands of visitors each year as a symbol of the city’s Mughal heritage. Authorities believe such high-level visits will further strengthen bilateral ties and open avenues for expanded collaboration in cultural conservation.
The visit concluded with discussions on future partnerships, with both sides expressing interest in broadening efforts to protect Bangladesh’s archaeological heritage.
Charles J. Harder arrived in Dhaka on April 18 for a three-day visit aimed at advancing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as education and child welfare.
