US imposes new visa restrictions on foreign nationals

The United States has delivered what is being described as major bad news regarding visas. The country’s State Department has announced that visa access will be restricted for individuals from countries in the Western Hemisphere who support US adversaries or help weaken American interests in the region.

According to a report by Al Jazeera on Thursday (April 16), the decision was confirmed in an official statement.

The State Department said that visas of 26 individuals have already been revoked under this policy. The move comes as Donald Trump seeks to expand US influence in the Western Hemisphere. He has referred to the approach as the “Donroe Doctrine,” describing it as a modern version of the Monroe Doctrine.

The report noted that since beginning his second term, the Trump administration has taken a hardline stance against drug trafficking in the Americas. It has also threatened economic sanctions and military action against countries that fail to comply. Additionally, the administration is working to counter China’s growing influence in Latin America, as many countries in the region have been strengthening ties with Beijing.

The State Department stated that the expanded visa restrictions would apply to those who knowingly direct, approve, or significantly assist US adversaries.

This includes helping hostile actors obtain strategic resources, undermining regional security efforts, harming US economic interests, and engaging in influence operations that weaken the sovereignty and stability of countries. However, the statement did not explicitly mention China or anti-narcotics operations.

This policy is also part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to revoke visas of foreign critics and political opponents. Last year, the administration attempted to cancel visas of pro-Palestinian protesters, arguing that their presence could pose risks to US foreign policy.

According to Al Jazeera, the administration has also revoked immigrant visas of at least seven individuals linked to the Iranian government or families connected to the Iranian Revolution.

The report said the names of the 26 individuals affected under the new policy were not disclosed. The actions were taken under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which the administration also used last year against some pro-Palestinian students.

Additionally, the US has already canceled visas of certain individuals in Latin America over political differences.

In July, visas of several officials involved in the investigation of former Brazilian right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro were revoked. Among them was Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, a central figure in criticism from right-wing groups.

Later, in September, the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro was revoked after he criticized US policies at the United Nations General Assembly. However, he was later invited to the White House in February.

The visa restrictions are part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration aimed at pressuring foreign groups and limiting immigration.

Earlier this year, the administration also imposed immigrant visa bans on citizens of several countries, citing security concerns and pressure on social services.

Trump has also taken a more aggressive stance toward governments in Latin America that he considers hostile, referring to the entire Western Hemisphere as the United States’ “neighborhood.”
