MPs urged to avoid phones in House
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on Wednesday urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to refrain from using mobile phones and taking photographs inside the House, citing disruptions to parliamentary proceedings.
The request followed concerns raised by Kayser Kamal, who was presiding over the sitting, regarding disturbances caused by phone conversations within the chamber.
The issue came to light as Hamidur Rahman was called to participate
in the discussion on the President’s address, after remarks by Abdul Mannan.
The Deputy Speaker observed that noise from mobile phone use was audible across the chamber, disrupting both speakers and those in attendance.
In response, the Chief Whip called on members to maintain the decorum and sanctity of the House. “I request that no one speak [on a mobile phone] in the Parliament chamber.
If anyone needs to speak, they should go outside,” he said, adding that the disturbance was noticeable even at the Speaker’s desk.
During the proceedings, the issue of photography was also raised, prompting Moni to clarify that taking pictures ???? the chamber is prohibited.
He further reminded lawmakers to comply with established Rules of Procedure, particularly regarding “crossing the floor”.
Members were cautioned against walking between the Speaker and a member who is addressing the House.
“Do not come and go through the middle. If you need to move, go around from behind. This is the rule,” he said, urging strict adherence to parliamentary etiquette.
