Women’s hockey team eye on Asian Games
20th Asian Games will be held in Nagoya, Japan in September. The Bangladesh men’s hockey team has already secured a ticket to the games through the qualifiers. This time, the women’s hockey team will also compete in the Asian Games.
The history of Bangladesh’s hockey is very old. The senior women’s national hockey team not yet entered the international arena. For the past few years, Bangladesh has played at the junior or age-based level.
This is the first time BD women’s national hockey team will play in the Asian Games. The special journey of Bangladesh women’s hockey will begin with the Asian Games Qualifiers.
Bangladesh women’s hockey team will depart for Indonesia on Monday (April 20) to take part in the women’s Asian Games Qualifying Hockey scheduled to be held from April 23-29 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Eight Asian countries will play in the qualifying tournament. Bangladesh, which pitted in Group ‘A’ along with Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, will play their group opening match against Chinese Taipei on April 23 before facing Uzbekistan and Hong Kong on April 24 and 26 respectively.
The two champions and runners-up from the two groups will play in the semi-finals. All four semi-finalists will get a chance to play in the
Asian Games. Bangladesh national women’s hockey team Head Coach Zahid Hossain Raju is hopeful of playing in the Asian Games.
“Chinese Taipei is a tough opponent in our group. We are looking forward to competing against Uzbekistan and Hong Kong. If we get positive results in these two matches, we can play in the semi-finals as the second team in the group. In that case, it will be a huge achievement for women’s hockey”, said Zahid Hossain Raju.
Bangladesh U-18 women’s hockey team won bronze in the Asian Cup. Those players from BKSP will now play for the national team.
Zahid Hossain Raju said, “Many of the BKSP players have experience playing in age-based international competitions. The national team has been practicing since last February. Preparation and age-based experience are our hope.
