Conspectus: Khaled, Afzal remanded again
Two former officials of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) have been placed on remand for varying durations in connection with the murder of BNP activist Makbul Hossain in a case filed with Paltan Model Police Station in the capital.
The accused are former Director General of the DGFI Lieutenant General (Retd ) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, and dismissed former DGFI official Md Afzal Naser.
On Sunday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after hearing two separate petitions filed by the investigating officer.
The court granted a one-day remand for Mamun Khaled and a two-day remand for Afzal Naser.
Earlier, police produced the two accused before the court. Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of the Detective Branch (Motijheel Division), also the investigating officer of the case, had sought a one-day remand for Mamun Khaled and a five-day remand for Afzal Naser.
Defence counsel Morshed Hossain Shaheen moved for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand petitions, while public prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court partially granted the remand requests.
According to case details, Mamun Khaled was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a residence in Mirpur DOHS on the night of March 25. He had previously been remanded for a total of 16 days in four phases.
Afzal Naser was arrested on March 30 from a house on Road No 12 in Mirpur DOHS by the DB and was earlier placed on a total of 13 days’ remand in three phases.
The case statement alleges that on December 10, 2022, during a BNP programme demanding the fall of the then government, attacks and vandalism were carried out at the party’s Nayapaltan office.
