Sylhet city to see visible changes in 2-3 years: Minister Khandaker

Textiles and Jute, Commerce and Industry Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir MP said that Sylhet will be developed into a modern tourist city at a development meeting held at Nagar Bhaban on Saturday. Work is progressing as planned for this purpose, and visible changes will be seen within the next 2 to 3 years, he added.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a Sylhet City Corporation development meeting held in the Nagar Bhaban meeting room on Saturday (April 11) afternoon.

The minister said that Sylhet will be developed as a “vibrant city,” featuring a dynamic environment, cultural diversity, and strong economic activity.

He added that if one million citizens of Sylhet are engaged, it is possible to build an aesthetic and sustainable city.

However, he emphasized that a sustainable approach must be prioritized in all development projects.

Stressing the need to reduce waterlogging, he said that if effective initiatives are not taken now, low-lying areas could become uninhabitable in the future.

Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury presided over the meeting. He said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has a special vision for Sylhet and is personally providing overall support for the city’s development.

Work is underway to build a green and clean city, and with collective efforts, a modern city can be achieved.

City Corporation Secretary Md. Ashiq Noor conducted the meeting, while Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rezai Rafin Sarkar delivered the welcome speech. Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Md. Obaidur Rahman attended as special guest.

Engineer Tanmoy Chaki presented a PowerPoint presentation on waterlogging at the meeting. Architect Shakur Majid presented the design of the Laldighi Par Super Market, while Architect Intekhab Hossain presented the proposed interior design of Nagar Bhaban. Assistant Engineer Angshuman Bhattacharya presented details of ongoing projects.

The meeting was attended by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. M. Sarwaruddin Chowdhury and Sylhet Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury as special guests.

In addition, City Corporation Chief Engineer (Acting) Md. Ali Akbar, Chief Revenue Officer Biswajit Deb, Chief Health Officer Dr. Md. Zahidul Islam, Chief Property Officer Sunanda Roy, Executive Magistrate Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Mohammad Eklim Abdin, Executive Engineer (Civil) Roji Uddin Khan, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Joydev Biswas, Executive Engineer (Mechanical) Mohammad Ullah, Chief Assessor Md. Abdul Basit, Accounting Officer ANM Mansuf, Administrative Officer Hanifur Rahman, Public Relations Officer (A.D.) Nehar Ranjan Purkayastha, Tax Officer Md. Jamilur Rahman, License Officer Rubel Ahmed, Md. Mahbubur Rahman, and other officials and employees of the City Corporation were also present.

The meeting began with the recitation of holy scriptures. The Holy Quran was recited by Chief Engineer Md. Ali Akbar and the Gita was recited by Jyotish Chakraborty.
