Delhi's Diplomatic Shift: Arif Mohammed Khan tipped for Dhaka role
Arif Mohammed Khan is being widely reported as the likely next Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, following the reassignment of Pranay Verma as ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
According to a press release issued by Ministry of External Affairs on Friday of India, Verma is expected to assume his new role shortly.
His impending departure has prompted speculation over his successor in Dhaka, with several Indian media outlets identifying Khan as the frontrunner.
Reports indicate that Khan, a senior figure associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, most recently served as governor of Bihar from 2025 to 2026.
Prior to that, he held the governorship of Kerala from 2019 to 2025. He has also served as a Union minister, overseeing several portfolios, including civil aviation.
One report, published by a platform specialising in India’s civil service and governance, noted that Khan’s potential appointment would be a departure from recent practice, with the post traditionally held by career diplomats.
If confirmed, it would mark the first such political appointment to the Dhaka mission in several years.
However, as of Friday, there has been no official confirmation from Indian government sources regarding the appointment.
Verma, who assumed office in Dhaka on 21 September 2022, has served during a period marked by strains in bilateral relations, particularly following political developments in Bangladesh after the July 2024 uprising.
A career diplomat, Verma joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1994 and has held postings in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Beijing, Kathmandu, Washington DC and Hanoi. Before his assignment in Dhaka, he served as India’s ambassador to Vietnam from July 2019.
