DU VC calls for building clean, green campus

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof A.B.M Obaidul Islam today called for building a clean and green campus from the concerned positions.

“Cleanliness is an integral part of faith, and this spirit should guide both personal and institutional practices,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at an event titled “Clean Campus, Green Campus-2026.”

The programme was held at the university’s Mall Chattar area on Friday morning, aiming to build a clean and environment-friendly campus, reports BSS.

Dhaka University Estate Office, Dhaka University Environment Society, Bangladesh Society for Ecological Research (BSER), and Green Future Foundation, Bangladesh jointly organized the event.

Director of the Dhaka University Arbory Culture Center Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin chaired the event while Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Dr. Abdus Salam and Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarker took part as the special guests. Officials, staff, and students from various departments of the university were present.

DU VC emphasized that just as individuals are conscious about maintaining personal hygiene and clean clothing, equal importance must be given to keeping the surrounding environment clean.

He further said, “The behavioral awareness and discipline observed in developed countries are worth emulating. People there do not litter indiscriminately; rather, they wait to dispose of waste in designated places.”

He stressed the need to cultivate such a mindset locally.
He added that trees help keep the environment cool and pure.

The comparatively higher number of trees on the Dhaka University campus contributes to a pleasant atmosphere. He called for collective efforts to preserve and further enhance this environment.

Following the programme, the Vice-Chancellor and other guests took part in a tree plantation event and a cleanliness drive.
