Ex-DGFI chief Khaled on 3-day remand
A Dhaka court placed former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled on a three-day fresh remand in connection with the murder of BNP activist Makbul Hossain in the capital’s Nayapaltan area on Thursday.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid passed the order following a hearing, with this latest order, Khaled has now been remanded for a total of 17 days across four phases, reports media.
State prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
Shamsuddoha Sumon stated that police produced the accused before the court after completion of a 14-day remand in the third phase and sought an additional seven-day remand in the case filed with Paltan Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of the Detective Branch’s Motijheel Division Special Operation Team filed the remand petition.
Defense lawyers filed a petition seeking cancellation of the remand order and requested bail, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand again.
Earlier, Mamun Khaled was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch of police from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on the night of March 25.
The following day, a court granted a five-day remand. He was subsequently remanded for six days on March 31 and again for three days on April 6.
According to the case statement, on December 10, 2022, the BNP announced a one-point demand movement calling for the fall of the then government.
During that period, attacks and vandalism were carried out at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, and thousands of leaders and activists gathered nearby were assaulted. Makbul Hossain was shot during the violence and later succumbed to his injuries.
The case was filed on September 30 by Mahfuzur Rahman, naming 256 accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Mamun Khaled is also among those named in the case.
