HC grants bail to Baul singer Abul Sarkar

The High Court has granted bail to Baul singer Abul Sarkar, who was arrested on charges including hurting religious sentiments.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Md Sagir Hossain granted him bail for six months on Monday, reports media.

Therefore, the court issued a rule.

Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal represented the petitioner during the hearing, while Deputy Attorney General Sultana Akter Ruby appeared for the state.

Earlier, on November 4, 2025, allegations emerged that Abul Sarkar made remarks deemed offensive to religion during a pala gaan performance at “Khala Pagli’s fair” in Jabra area of Ghior upazila in Manikganj. A video of the remarks later spread on social media, triggering criticism.

On the night of November 19, a team of Manikganj Detective Branch (DB) detained him from a musical event in Madaripur. He was brought to the Manikganj DB office the following morning.

Later that day, a case was filed with Ghior Police Station by one Mufti Md Abdullah, accusing Sarkar of blasphemy. He was subsequently shown arrested in the case and sent to jail through the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Manikganj.

Sarkar later filed a petition with the High Court seeking bail in the case, which has now been granted.
