RNPP set to begin electricity generation

Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant is about to achieve another milestone. After several delays, uranium fuel is now being loaded into the reactor of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP).

All preparations have been completed for the fuel loading in Unit-1. Anwar Hossain, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, announced that uranium rods will be loaded into the reactor on April 7. This process may take about a month to complete.

Amid the Middle East conflict, energy infrastructure is repeatedly being targeted, reducing global fuel supply and driving up prices. Over 70% of Bangladesh’s imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) comes from Qatar, which may suspend production for an extended period.

Damage at Ras Laffan Industrial City due to missile attacks by Iran has raised concerns about potential major electricity shortages and disruptions in industrial production in Bangladesh. In this context, experts and locals consider the decision to begin nuclear power generation at Rooppur timely and prudent.
