DMP warns of action over illegal footpath encroachment
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken a strict stance to reclaim footpaths and roads in the capital.
Authorities have ordered the immediate removal of extensions of shops, restaurants, workshops, and other establishments that have encroached upon sidewalks and roads in Dhaka.
It has also been announced that, failing compliance, legal action will be taken through mobile courts from 1 April , reports media.
The information was issued on Monday in a public notice signed by the acting Commissioner of DMP, Md Sarwar.
The notice states that businesses in various areas of the capital are operating beyond their designated boundaries by occupying footpaths and road space, causing severe disruption to pedestrian movement and, in many cases, posing safety risks.
It further notes that cooking equipment from restaurants, including grills, kebab machines, motors, and workshop tools such as tires, welding equipment, and other materials, as well as display items from clothing and furniture shops, are being placed on footpaths and roads. In some cases, motor workshops are even occupying an entire lane of the road to carry out repair work.
The notice also states that due to such illegal encroachments, pedestrians are forced to walk on the road, increasing traffic congestion and the risk of accidents.
All business owners have been urged to immediately remove their goods from footpaths and roads.
Failure to comply will result in strict legal action, including imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of goods, through mobile courts led by Special Metropolitan Magistrates and Executive Magistrates.
