PM orders crackdown on violence against women
The government has placed renewed focus on addressing violence against women, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directing a special nationwide drive to take action against perpetrators.
The directive came during a cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, chaired by the prime minister, according to cabinet sources.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani said a suo motu instruction had been issued concerning both ongoing and past rape cases.
“Authorities have been asked to take swift and decisive action to curb such crimes in society,” he said.
Responding to a query, he noted that multiple agencies are involved in handling these cases and have been instructed to improve coordination to ensure quicker resolution.
He added that the government aims to strengthen institutional capacity by empowering courts at the district level to expedite trials.
Separately, the prime minister also directed the Ministries of Agriculture and Disaster Management and Relief to assist those affected by recent hailstorms and flash floods in Thakurgaon, Joypurhat and Sunamganj.
While long-term measures are being planned, immediate assistance will be provided using funds allocated to deputy commissioners, the cabinet secretary added.
