Dhaka assures one-China policy to deepen ties

Dhaka has reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China principle and pledged to further deepen ties with Beijing, as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held talks with Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen in Dhaka on Monday.

According to a Facebook post by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh, the meeting focused on China-Bangladesh relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Ambassador Yao congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on his inauguration and the successful holding of Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections. He also conveyed “heartfelt congratulations and best wishes” from Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

“The Chinese side is prepared to carry forward the traditional friendship, strengthen political mutual trust, and deepen comprehensive pragmatic cooperation together with the Bangladeshi side,” Ambassador Yao said.

He added that China supports the new government in ensuring smooth governance and “safeguarding national unity, stability, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.”

The envoy also expressed Beijing’s support for Bangladesh in opposing foreign interference and encouraged Dhaka to play a greater role in regional and international affairs.

In response, the prime minister thanked the ambassador for conveying the greetings of Chinese leaders and reaffirmed Dhaka’s longstanding policy toward Beijing.

“Bangladesh will firmly adhere to the one-China principle, uphold the tradition of friendship with China, and is willing to work with China to continue the friendship and deepen cooperation, so as to elevate the China-Bangladesh Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership to a new height,” he said.

In the meeting both sides expressed readiness to expand cooperation under the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
