Allegations of attacks on Jamaat leader Selim Uddin’s supporters
Sylhet Bureau :
Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Selim Uddin said that political tension has spread in Beanibazar, Sylhet in the post-election period. He has alleged attacks on his workers and supporters by political opponents.
This was announced at a press conference at the Jamaat-e-Islami office in Beanibazar Upazila of the district on Saturday night.
Mohammad Selim Uddin complained at the press conference, “After the election results were announced, BNP supporters and the evil forces that rose up under their umbrella in different areas of Beanibazar Upazila got agitated and attacked the houses of Jamaat supporters in the area. Sharifa Begum of Inam village of Tilpara union was physically tortured and her house was attacked. The houses of Mustafa Uddin, Ayub and Shahed Ahmed of Dakshin Pariabahar village of Lauta union were vandalized.”
Since the election results were announced on Wednesday night, Selim Uddin’s supporters in some villages of the upazila have been living in fear of physical abuse and vandalism of their homes. Many have been threatened with beatings over the phone or in person.
Mohammad Selim Uddin said, “Fearing the popularity of Daripalla (in Beanibazar-Golapganj), many have come together to defeat Daripalla Selim Uddin at any cost. They have been assured that their cases will be withdrawn. After the election, I see many accused in the complaint coming out in public. They are raising slogans against Jamaat Shibir in various ways.
This is a bad sign. If this is the situation in the new Bangladesh, fascism will return again and street protests will begin, which is not desirable at all.”
He said, “The administration has shown a great lack of sincerity in creating an environment that was supposed to be fair in the elections. We have accepted the elections.
According to the vote ratio across the country, Jamaat-e-Islami is coming to power as a major opposition party. The government has not been formed yet. The interim government is in place, and such behavior is regrettable.
We have seen that the government party always speaks sincerely to the opposition party and cannot provide them with security, which goes against the government. We are calling on the BNP to behave as a moderate party.”
Some of the injured have been given primary treatment at the Beanibazar Upazila Health Complex. It is learned that two seriously injured people have been sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Mohammad Selim Uddin complained, “Our workers and supporters have been attacked in a planned manner out of anger over the defeat in the elections. A mother was beaten up just because a meeting was held in the yard of the scales at her house. It is very regrettable that we are demanding the administration to arrest and bring to justice the guilty.”
When asked about the matter, he said, “A case has been filed with Beanibazar Police Station on behalf of the families of the victims of the attack. Jamaat-e-Islami will provide all necessary assistance for their fair trial.”
Beanibazar Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Faizul Islam, Secretary Kazi Abul Kashem, Assistant Secretary, Mohammad Abdul Hamid, Mohammad Rukon Uddin, Beanibazar Upazila Chhatra Shibir South President Fatehul Islam also attend the press conference.
