Govt to honour 100 teachers with Tk1 lakh

The government plans to honour 100 selected teachers with Tk1 lakh each on October 5, World Teachers’ Day, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the education sector.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon announced the plan on Sunday ahead of the first meeting of the national steering committee formed to organise the World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
He spoke to journalists at the conference room of the Education Ministry at the Secretariat before the meeting.

“Our teachers’ community is the main driving force behind changes and progress in the education system. Our primary objective is to properly recognise, reward and encourage those who are doing outstanding work at the grassroots level. On World Teachers’ Day, October 5, we want to remember and honour the contributions of teachers across the country,” he said. The minister said a policy for selecting the best teachers was being finalised. Previously, only 12 teachers received Tk2 lakh each, with a total allocation of Tk24 lakh.

“But our Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s goal is to ensure due respect for teachers. In line with this objective, the government has decided to expand the scope of the initiative and recognise skilled and meritorious teachers across the country. A total of 100 selected teachers will receive Tk1 lakh each along with awards and recognition,” he said.

On a proposed code of conduct for teachers, Milon said teachers should set an example for society through educated and exemplary behaviour.

He said necessary policies and guidelines were being reviewed in line with international standards to prevent inappropriate activities on social media and protect the image of the education system.
On outstanding dues owed to retired teachers, the minister said the overdue portion of teachers’ own contributions from 2016 through August 2026 had already been paid.
