HC qsns delay in reg KSP
Staff reporter:
The High Court has asked Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him for failing to comply with its order to dispose of an application seeking registration of a new political party.
A bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan issued a rule, directing the CEC to submit his explanation within four weeks.
The order followed the filing of a contempt petition by Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond, who alleged that the Election Commission had ignored a High Court directive issued on August 27, 2025.
Akond said he had applied for registration of the Krishak Sramik Janata Party through the prescribed process. When the commission did not take any action on the application, he submitted it again.
With no response from the Election Commission, he moved the High Court, which subsequently ordered the chief election commissioner to promptly dispose of the registration application.
According to Akond, several months have passed since the order was issued, but the directive has yet to be implemented. “That is why I filed the contempt petition,” he said.
Md Eunus Ali Akond is also the convenor of the Krishak Sramik Janata Party
