‘Protests loom if dual citizens, loan defaulters participate in polls’

Staff Reporter :

Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, chairman of the National Citizens’ Committee (NCP) election management committee, has declared that loan defaulters and dual citizens will be barred from participating in the upcoming elections.

He made the announcement at an emergency press conference on Saturday evening.

Speaking at the briefing, Asif Mahmud criticized the ongoing “show of muscle power” at the Election Commission, where political parties are reportedly bringing hundreds of supporters and even rehearsing lawyers for hearings.

“While BNP claims to be the torchbearers of democracy, the candidates they back are engaging in anti-democratic practices,” he said.

He further remarked, “Those who looted the country’s resources, moved abroad, and accumulated wealth, now return with dual citizenship aiming to become public representatives. We will not allow them to participate in the elections in any way.”

Asif Mahmud also warned that if any loan defaulters or dual citizens are allowed to vote, the NCP will resort to street protests in addition to pursuing legal action.

Concluding his statement, he emphasized, “I will not allow this Election Commission to conduct a fraudulent election under any circumstances.”
