150 aspirants regain nominations in 3 days

A total of 150 aspirant candidates have regained their nominations over three days after filing appeals with the Election Commission (EC), following the rejection of their nomination papers by returning officers.

On the third day of appeal hearings, held on Monday, the EC approved 41 appeals. Among those approved was a previously pending application by Mohammad Hamidul Islam, a National People’s Party (NPP) candidate from the Mymensingh-4 constituency, which had remained unresolved since Sunday.

Earlier, 51 candidates regained their nominations on the first day (Saturday), followed by 58 on the second day (Sunday), bringing the three-day total to 150.

According to a press release signed by EC Public Relations Director Md Ruhul Amin Mallik, the Commission disposed of 71 appeals on Monday, including one carried over from the previous day. Of these, 41 appeals were approved, 24 were rejected, and four were kept pending.

One appeal by independent candidate Shakila Farzana from Chattogram-5 was withdrawn by the applicant. Meanwhile, the appeal related to Pabna-2 could not be heard due to the suspension of the election in that constituency.

The EC will hear and dispose of 70 more appeals on the fourth day, today (Tuesday), at the Election Building auditorium.

Among those whose appeals were approved on Monday were candidates from several political parties, including Jatiya Party (3), Bangladesh Cultural Alliance (1), Gono Odhikar Parishad (4), Islami Andolon Bangladesh (1), Gono Front (2), Bangladesh Supreme Party (1), Janata Dal (1), Gono Forum (1), Ganosamhati Andolon (1), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlish (3), Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) (4), National Citizen Party (NCP) (1), Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh (1), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist) (1), Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party (1), Citizens’ Unity (1), National People’s Party (NPP) (1), and Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (1).
Others who regained nominations include 10 independent candidates and candidates from various smaller parties.

For the 13th National Parliamentary Election, a total of 2,568 nomination papers were submitted. Of these, 723 were rejected during scrutiny by returning officers.

Against these decisions, 645 appeals were filed with the Election Commission within the stipulated timeframe.
According to the announced election schedule, January 18 is the final date for disposal of appeals. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until January 20.

The final list of candidates will be known thereafter, and electoral symbols will be allocated on January 21. Campaigning will begin following symbol allocation, with voting scheduled for February 12.
