Mother-in-law nabbed for killing housewife in Dasar

Police have arrested Saleha Begum (70), an elderly mother-in-law, on the run in the case of the suicide of housewife Sumi Akter Mim by consuming poison after being tortured by her in-laws in Dasar upazila of Madaripur.

She was arrested on Thursday night. The deceased Sumi Akter Mim is the daughter of Alim Howlader of Bhalukshi village in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal district and the wife of Farhad Akon of Azalia village in Dasar upazila.

It is worth noting that since their marriage, the housewife Mim had been in conflict with her in-laws over various family issues.

A dowry of 10 lakh taka was demanded from Mim’s family to pay off the debt of Mim’s husband Farhad Akon for his foreign trip. Since she could not pay the demanded money, the in-laws have been torturing her mentally and physically for a long time.

Mim had an argument with her in-laws over dowry money on Tuesday afternoon. At one point, she drank harmful chemicals from the house.

Later, her family members first took her to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex. When her condition deteriorated there, she was sent to the Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital for better treatment.

However, after being taken to the emergency department, the doctor on duty declared her dead at night.
The deceased’s family filed a case with Dasar Police Station in this incident. Saleha Begum was arrested in this case. The deceased’s father, Alim Howlader, complained that although Saleha Begum was arrested, the remaining accused are absconding.

We demand their immediate arrest. In this regard, Dasar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Solaiman Mahmud said that the deceased’s in-laws have been fleeing the house since the incident. One has been arrested. The rest will be arrested soon.
