Fog, freezing cold disrupt haor

The haor region is in the grip of an intensifying winter spell, as dense fog, and failing temperatures have brought daily life to a near standstill across much to the haor areas of the country.
Dense fog and intense cold have been prevailing in Kishoreganj’s Nikli haor upazila from morning to afternoon for the past four days.
The sky remained cloudy and foggy on Thursday morning, preventing the sun from shining.
Thick fog has settled over large swathes of Kishoreganj’s haor areas, implying the cold and disruption transport, work and healthcare.
Vehicles were moving slowly with their headlights on even during the day, as most roads were slippery due to thick fog and dew.
The Meteorological Department of Nikli said that lowest temperature recorded at 9 am was 11 degrees Celsius.
Due to the dense fog and the severity of the cold, the locals are suffering, especially the low-income and working class people, agricultural workers and shipping workers.
According to the health center, with the increase in the severity of the cold, the number of patients suffering from fever, cold, diarrhea, typhoid and pneumonia in the hospital has increased. The number of children and the elderly is the highest among the affected.
Various animals and birds including cows, goats are suffering due to severe cold.
Md.Jalil, a resident of Nikli Singpur Union, said, “We haven’t seen sunlight all day today. From a distance, it looks like mist is falling like drizzle. On top of that, it’s extremely cold.”
Worker Swapan Miah said, “I came to work in the middle of the bitter cold because of my stomach. There has been so much fog since morning that I can’t even see anything far away. It’s almost impossible to drive a van if the sun doesn’t rise.”
