Armed forces magistracy power extended till Feb

Staff Reporter :

The government on Tuesday extended the special magistracy powers of commissioned officers of the armed forces with the rank of captain or above until February 28 next year.

The same powers were also extended to officers on deputation with the Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh, allowing them to act as executive magistrates under several provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.

In accordance with Sections 12(1) and 17 of The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, special executive magistracy power is being conferred to those officers nationwide for the specified period.

They have been empowered under Sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. Earlier, on September 11, the government extended the executive magistracy power of these officers for 60 days.

Officials said these measures reflect the government’s determination to maintain order, protect citizens, and ensure that the forthcoming election takes place peacefully despite attempts by the ousted Awami League to spread violence and fear.
