A top-listed criminal was shot dead in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area this morning, police said.
A top-listed criminal was shot and killed in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area this morning, police said. The deceased was identified as Tarik Saif Mamun, 55. Fazlul Haque, assistant commissioner of Kotwali Zone Police, confirmed the incident to The Daily Star. Mallic Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of Lalbagh Division Police, said Mamun was a top-listed criminal and that investigators are pursuing the attackers. Mamun was shot in the chest near Dhaka National Medical College Hospital and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he later died around 11:45 am.
Mohibullah, ward master at Dhaka National Medical College Hospital, said the shooting occurred around 11:00 am in front of the hospital. Staff rushed to the main gate after hearing gunfire and found Mamun on the street, bleeding. He was rescued and brought to the hospital, but his condition deteriorated.
Security guard Md Talha said two men arrived on a rickshaw; one fired the first shot, hitting Mamun in the leg. After he collapsed, three to four more rounds were fired before the attackers fled.
An acquaintance, Faizul Haque Opu, said he received a call from Mamun’s phone in the morning and identified the body at DMCH. Mamun’s national identity card lists Lakshmipur Sadar upazila as his origin. Police noted he had narrowly escaped a 2023 attack.
In September 2023, Mamun was targeted in Tejgaon Industrial Area, with attackers also injuring a lawyer nearby. Earlier, he was released on bail after 26 years in prison. Authorities said the attackers were loyal to top-listed criminal Sanjidul Hassan Emon, an accused in the Sohel Chowdhury murder case. Mamun and Emon reportedly had a falling out after Mamun’s release. Mamun’s wife, Dipa, said the family owned a garment business in Mirpur and lived in Aftabnagar with their two daughters. She added that Mamun had left for a court hearing shortly before his death and that she suspects Emon could be behind the attack.
