Defamation case against Moeen to continue: SC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned down a petition seeking the cancellation of a defamation case filed against former army chief Moeen U Ahmed, clearing the way for the continuation of the case.
A 5-memeber Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain passed the order after hearing on a petition filed by Moyeen’s lawyer.
Former BNP state minister for energy Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku filed the defamation case against the former army chief on September 8,2009.
A petition was filed with a lower court seeking dismissal of the case on
January 10,2010, but the court rejected the petition.
The High Court also rejected Moeen’s petition seeking cancellation of the case proceedings on January 24, 2010. Later, Moyeen’s lawyer filed a petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
At a programme at the National Parade Square on March 27, 2007, Moeen U Ahmed said corrupt politicians had looted and siphoned off at least Tk 20,000 crore of the energy sector during the tenure of the four-party government. Later, Hassan Mahmood filed a Tk 100 crore defamation case with Dhaka third joint district judges’ court.
Tuku’s lawyer Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokon said now the case proceedings will continue at the lower court uninterruptedly following the order.
