BD, US talks on regional political and security issues

Bangladesh and the United States have recently talked on regional political, security issues and reduction of tariff and trade gap, said Chief Adviser’s Press Wing on Saturday.

According to the CA office, National Security Adviser and High Representative for the Rohingya issue Dr Khalilur Rahman met with Senior US officials on Oct 3 in Washington DC.

Bangladesh’s new Ambassador to the US Tareq M Ariful Islam was present at the meetings.
During his meeting with Ms Allison Hooker, Under Secretary for Political Affairs, she reiterated strong US support for the leadership of Chief Adviser Prof Muahmmad Yunus and steps by the Interim Government in regard to the upcoming elections in February.

They also discussed regional political and security issues. Ambassador Hooker expressed support to Bangladesh’s efforts to resolve the Rohingya issue.

Dr Rahman conveyed sincere thanks to the US for announcing $60 million in aid to Rohingya at the UN International Conference on the Rohingyas.

It is noted that Dr Yunus presented six proposals at the Conference to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis.

Meanwhile, CA office said that Dr Rahman discussed a broad range of bilateral matters during separate meetings with Nicole Chulick, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and Andrew Herrup, Deputy Assistant Secretary.

Dr Rahman also met with Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch and discussed follow-up actions regarding recently concluded tariff negotiations.

He reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to reduce the trade gap with the US and requested Lynch to consider further reduction in tariffs as the trade gap becomes narrower.

Lynch assured full consideration of the matter as the tariff agreements gets implemented and trade gaps get reduced.
