Protest in N’ganj, Highway Blocked with Burning Tires After Attack on VP Nur

Staff Correspondent :
In protest against the attack on former DUCSU Vice President and Gono
Adhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur along with central leaders and
activists, leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad and National
Citizen Party (NCP) blocked the highway in Sonargaon, Narayanganj,
by setting tires on fire.
The blockade was enforced around 8 p.m. on Saturday (August 30) at
the Mograpara intersection of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway. During
the program, party leaders demanded the immediate arrest and
exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on Nurul
Haque Nur. The protest caused a 6-kilometer-long traffic jam on the
Dhaka-bound lane of the highway.
Present at the protest were Mohibullah Pradhan, General Secretary of
Narayanganj District Student Rights Council, Zahidul Haque Badhan,
leader of Jubo Shokti, along with other leaders and activists of the
Student Rights Council and Jubo Shokti.
Speakers at the blockade said the government is carrying out one attack
after another on opposition leaders and activists to suppress the
democratic movement in the country. They warned that if Nurul Haque
Nur or any member of Gono Adhikar Parishad is attacked again, a
tougher movement will be launched.
Protesters lit tires and staged demonstrations, completely halting traffic
on the highway.
Later, after intervention from the Kanchpur Highway Police, the
protesters withdrew from the Dhaka–Chattogram highway about half an
hour later. Before ending the protest, they declared that if the
perpetrators are not punished within 24 hours, they would again paralyze
the streets.
Kanchpur Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Kadir Jilani
said: “We went to the protesters and explained the situation, after which
they lifted the blockade. Traffic is now running normally.”
