Arrest warrants issued against Aslam Chy

Staff Reporter :

A Chattogram money loan court has issued arrest warrants against BNP central executive committee member Aslam Chowdhury and his wife, Nazneen Maola Chowdhury, in connection with a Tk260.77 crore loan default case.

Judge Md Helal Uddin of Money Loan Court-1 passed the order on Tuesday (19 August) after a hearing.

According to court sources, Standard Bank’s Pahartali branch in Chattogram granted the loan against mortgaged property.

However, despite repeated attempts, the loan has not been repaid. The bank’s efforts to auction the mortgaged assets also failed, as no buyers were interested. In response to the bank’s petition, the court issued arrest warrants for Aslam and his wife.

Aslam Chowdhury, a controversial BNP leader, was released on bail following last year’s July mass uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government. Over the years, he has faced at least 76 cases on various charges.

He was first arrested on 15 May 2016 from Dhaka’s Khilkhet area.
The following day, police showed his arrest under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and placed him on remand.

On 26 May of the same year, after receiving approval from the Home Ministry, Gulshan police filed a sedition case against him, accusing him of conspiring to topple the government by colluding with agents of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad.
