East West University (EWU) celebrated its 24th Convocation on Wednesday at its Aftabnagar campus, conferring degrees upon 2,885 students from both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Professor Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Education Adviser, attended the ceremony as the representative of the President. He conferred the degrees and presented gold medals to six outstanding graduates in recognition of academic excellence.
In his address, Dr Abrar reflected on the complexities of today’s world, noting how rapid technological advancement has created both promise and peril. He urged graduates to face rising global challenges—such as intolerance, ultranationalism, and divisive ideologies—with empathy, courage, and a commitment to peace, justice, and tolerance.
The convocation speaker, Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director of Apex Footwear Ltd, delivered a motivational speech to the graduating class, emphasizing their critical role in shaping Bangladesh’s future.
“The next 25 to 30 years of our nation depend on the educated and skilled generation sitting before us,” he said. He encouraged students to embrace entrepreneurship and learn every stage of business operation, pointing to China’s development model as an inspiring example of economic transformation.
Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Professor Dr S M A Faiz, joined as a special guest. He highlighted ongoing reforms by the UGC to create a more supportive academic environment and reminded graduates to balance their professional ambitions with personal commitments, especially to their families.
Professor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of EWU’s Board of Trustees and founding Vice Chancellor, called for the establishment of a national Education Commission and the creation of a modern education policy aligned with global standards.
“We must wisely utilise the nation’s wealth and opportunities to change the perception that Bangladesh survives solely on imports,” he remarked.
