Interpol issues warrant for ex-IGP Benazir

A Dhaka court has ordered the issuance of an arrest warrant through Interpol for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed as first such actions against the deposed autocrat Hasina’s allies.

The order was given by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib on Monday (February 10), following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The directive was issued based on the application from the case’s investigating officer, ACC Director Hafizul Islam, with the commission’s approval.

On December 15, 2024, the ACC filed four cases against Benazir Ahmed, his wife, and two daughters, accusing them of accumulating illegal wealth amounting to Tk 74.13 crore and concealing asset information.

These charges stem from investigative reports published in a national daily on March 31 and April 3, 2024, titled “Benazir’s Aladdin’s Lamp at Home” and “Benazir’s Resort on Forest Land”, which detailed allegations of illegal wealth accumulation. Following these reports, authorities seized a significant amount of his movable and immovable assets.
