‘Rumours’ causing instability in CEPZ

Business Report :

Chattogram Metropolitan Police, or CMP, has claimed that a group is spreading rumours to create instability in the Chattogram Export Processing Zone, or CEPZ, which could potentially harm the garment industry and deter foreign investment.
“Recently, certain malicious groups have been deliberately spreading false rumours about trivial incidents, inciting workers in various factories, and creating unrest in the CEPZ. Outsiders are also involved in this,” CMP’s Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Rais Uddin said during a press conference on Saturday.
He urged people to remain vigilant about the spread of rumours.
“Workers, who depend on factories for their livelihood, cannot be involved in such activities. Anti-state forces are deliberately spreading these rumours. If the garment sector becomes unstable, foreign investment in the country will be disrupted,” he added.
Rais also referred to the recent unrest in the CEPZ following a rumour about three children being allegedly “slaughtered” in an under-construction building, reports bdnews24
The incident, which took place on Wednesday and Thursday, caused chaos among factory workers and led to protests.
On Wednesday evening, three children entered an under-construction building on CEPZ Road 2 in search of scrap metal.
After the rumour spread that they were being murdered, workers became agitated.
They vandalised the construction site and the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, or BEPZA, office nearby, and clashed with law-enforcing agencies.
Protesters blocked the Chattogram Airport Road until midnight.
