US reiterates support for democratic transition in Bangladesh

Staff Reporter :

United States (US) National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has spoken over the phone with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, reaffirming the US’s continued support for Bangladesh’s democratic process.

The call took place on Monday evening, during which Sullivan discussed issues of mutual interest with the Bangladeshi chief adviser. In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, Sullivan praised Dr. Yunus’s leadership since assuming the role of Chief Adviser of the Interim Government on August 8.

Sullivan commended Yunus for the progress Bangladesh has made under his leadership, particularly in reviving the economy and initiating critical political, electoral, and other reforms.

He also thanked the chief adviser for announcing potential election dates and reiterated the US’s commitment to supporting the democratic process in Bangladesh.

The conversation also covered the broader development situation in the country.

Professor Yunus expressed gratitude to the US for its significant support in addressing the challenges Bangladesh has been facing.

Sullivan reaffirmed the US’s backing for the Yunus-led interim government and its commitment to a prosperous, stable, and democratic Bangladesh.

The chief adviser acknowledged US assistance during this critical period and reflected on his earlier meetings with President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his visit to New York in September.

Professor Yunus mentioned that six major reform commission reports are expected by January, after which a consensus-building process will begin to prepare the nation for reforms and elections.
