EWU hosts public lecture on ‘World Trade and Bangladesh’

East West University (EWU) organised a Public Lecture on ‘World Trade and Bangladesh’.
Theevent was addressed by renowned economist, Professor Dr. M. G. Quibria, whose insights captivated the audience at the ‘Manzur Elahi Auditorium’ of the university on Tuesday.

Dr.Quibria, an esteemed economist with extensive experience at the AsianDevelopment Bank (ADB), emphasized the need for Bangladesh to diversify its export marketsbeyond Europe and the USA, focusing on neighboring countries like China and India. Hehighlighted the importance of investing in health and education to develop skilled humanresource and urged the government to address critical and vital issues like oil, gas, electricity,and banking sectors to remain competitive in the global economy.

The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Adviser of EWUand a former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, who pointed out that political and social stabilityare essential to attract foreign direct investments.

He also stressed the need for fair competitionin business policies and tax exemptions, avoiding favoritism to create an equitable businessenvironment in Bangladesh. The program began with a welcome speech by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellorof East West University.

The lecture concluded with a Q and A session, providing students andjournalists an opportunity to engage with the esteemed speakers. The event was attended byprominent economists, members of EWU Board of Trustees, Pro- Vice Chancellor, facultymembers, students, and officials.
