Barrister Mainul’s 1st death anniv observed

The first death anniversary of Barrister Mainul Hosein, former Adviser to the Caretaker Government and founder and publisher of The Daily New Nation, was observed on Monday with various programmes, including Milad and Doa Mahfil in different places of the country.

Barrister Mainul Hosein, also a distinguished lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, columnist, and author, passed away on 9th December 2023 while undergoing treatment in a city hospital.

A Quran Khwani and Doa Mahfil was held at his Baridhara residence in the morning yesterday offering prayers for eternal peace of the deported soul, family sources said.

Besides, recitation from the holy Quran was held at 10:30 AM at the graveyard in Azimpur, Dhaka, where he was laid to rest.

His younger brother, former Minister and President of Jatiya Party (JP) Anwar Hossain Manju and Mokarram Hossain, Editor of The New Nation along with journalists and officials from the daily Ittefaq and The New Nation took part in the munajat.

Latere, another Doa Mahfil was also held at the graveyard, where Barrister Mainul Hosein’s younger son Arshad Hosein, Editor of The New Nation Mokarram Hossain, journalists and officials of the daily, relatives and friends were present.

A Doa and Milad Mahfil was also held at the Ittefaq Building, 1 RK Mission Road, Motijheel, after Asr prayers praying for eternal peace of the departed soul.

After the Asr prayers another Doa and Milad Mahfil was also held at the Ittefaq office at Karwan Bazar where Muhibul Ahsan Shawon, Executive Director and Rezaul Ahsan Fagun, Director, journalists and officials of the daily were present.

Besides, special supplements were published in different newspapers commomorating his death aniversary.

Barrister Mainul Hosein was a leading figure in law, politics, and civil society. He was the eldest son of renowned journalist Tofazzal Hossain (Manik Mia). He was born in January 1940 in Pirojpur and graduated from Dhaka University in 1961, after which he pursued legal studies in London.
Returning to Bangladesh in 1965, he began his legal career at the Dhaka Bar Council.

Following his father’s sudden demise in 1969, he assumed the role of editor at The Daily Ittefaq. Later, he became the chairman of its editorial board.

Barrister Hosein represented his constituency of Bhandaria, Pirojpur, in Parliament as a member of the Awami League in 1973. However, he resigned in May 1975, alongside General MAG Osmani, in protest against the one-party political system known as BAKSAL.

He served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association from 2000 to 2001 and held the position of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser during the 2007-2008 caretaker government of Bangladesh.

His legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for democracy, press freedom, and an independent judiciary in Bangladesh.
