LAWYER SAIFUL MURDER: Prime accused remanded for 7 days

Staff Reporter :

The Chattogram court has granted a seven-day remand for the prime accused, Chandan Das, in the murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif. Another suspect, Ripon Das, has been remanded for five days.

On Friday afternoon, Kazi Shariful Islam, the judge of the CMM Special Magistrate Court, issued the remand orders after police produced the accused in court seeking a 10-day remand for each.

The information was confirmed by Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan of the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Court.

Earlier on Friday, under heavy security, the two suspects were presented before the court. Law enforcement agencies ensured tight security in and around the court premises since morning.

The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) stated that Chandan Das was arrested on Thursday at the Bhairab Railway Station.

He was later handed over to CMP authorities that night. Another accused, Ripon Das, was apprehended from the Anwara area of Chattogram on Thursday
evening based on secret intelligence.

Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) of CMP, mentioned that Ripon Das was not named in the First Information Report (FIR).

However, video footage of the murder showed him holding a machete in one hand and a blue t-shirt in the other. This led investigators to identify him as a suspect in the murder of lawyer Saiful.

The murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif occurred on November 26 when he was brutally hacked and beaten to death by followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Sammilito Sanatoni Jagoron Jote.

This happened after Chinmoy was denied bail in a sedition case and sent to jail. As Chinmoy was being transported in a prison van, over a thousand of his followers staged a violent protest, attempting to block the vehicle.

Law enforcement dispersed the mob using baton charges and sound grenades.

Lawyer Saiful was attacked by Chinmoy’s followers while returning home from work in the court area that day.

The gruesome murder shocked the legal community and prompted intensified investigations, leading to the arrests of Chandan and Ripon.

Further investigations are ongoing to uncover more details about the incident.
