Russia backs Bangladesh’s BRICS engagement

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey A. Ryabkov has pledged to elevate the “matured” relations between Russia and Bangladesh to new heights.

He emphasized that Russia would support Bangladesh’s enhanced role in BRICS.

During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Ryabkov thanked the Bangladeshi government for its renewed commitment to engaging with the BRICS process.

He assured that the Russian government would back Bangladesh’s greater role in the bloc as it expands in the future, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting, attended by Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md Jashim Uddin, focused on mutual interests and cooperation aimed at further strengthening ties between the two countries. They discussed plans for the next Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) to be held in Moscow.

The Foreign Secretary highlighted the historical ties between Bangladesh and Russia, stressing the importance of cooperation in energy and food security.

He also thanked Ryabkov for inviting Bangladesh to the BRICS summit and expressed the country’s keen interest in contributing to the BRICS process.

Ryabkov praised Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateralism and its strong stance on issues related to a multipolar world, which he described as essential for sustaining a rules-based global order.

He noted that the BRICS Declaration (Kazan Declaration), under Russian presidency, would prioritize practical and result-oriented cooperation for developing countries.

Additionally, he acknowledged Bangladesh’s role as a full-fledged member of the New Development Bank (NDB) and assured continued support in this regard.

Faisal Ahmed, Charge d’Affaires of the Bangladesh Embassy in Moscow, and senior officials from both sides were present at the meeting.

Earlier, the Foreign Secretary addressed the 16th BRICS Summit, expressing Bangladesh’s commitment to promoting a rules-based international trading system and amplifying the voices of the Global South on issues such as reforming international financial institutions, migrants’ rights, climate justice, debt sustainability, and creating a fair and inclusive global order.

He also called for an immediate end to the genocide in Gaza, urging the international community to take effective measures to address this crisis.
