Six die, 209 escape from Kashimpur Jail

In a dramatic incident at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday, six inmates, including three militants, were shot dead by prison security personnel, while 209 others managed to escape.

Senior Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala confirmed the fatalities and the escape on Wednesday. The identities of the deceased are yet to be disclosed, but it has been confirmed that among the dead were three militants.

The incident unfolded on the morning of August 6, when a rebellion broke out among the inmates. According to Bala, the prisoners attempted to breach the facility’s walls, with some climbing over them and others using pipes to assist their escape.

As the uprising intensified, the inmates attacked prison guards in their bid to flee. In response, the army was called in to suppress the rebellion. Despite their efforts, 209 inmates successfully escaped by scaling the walls of the prison. During the operation to regain control, security personnel fired upon the rebellious inmates, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. The bodies have been sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

By 9:30 AM on Tuesday, army personnel arrived by helicopter and took command of the main gate and other access points of the prison. Local residents reported hearing extensive gunfire from within the facility earlier in the day.

In a related development, several prisoners managed to escape from Kushtia District Jail around 2:30 PM on Wednesday, August 7. The prison guards fired shots in an attempt to control the situation, and multiple army teams were deployed to restore order. The situation at Kushtia District Jail was brought under control following the intervention of the military.
