A reconditioned private car imported from Japan caught fire in the interior of the jetty No. 01 at Mongla Sea Port on Thursday (July 11) at noon, according to a report received here. A unit of Mongla Port Fire Service Station rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after fighting for long half an hour. But in spite of that the car was completely burnt.
Another car that was standing almost near the burnt car sustained heat of the fire. But it was not damaged majorly. As a result, both the Port Authorities and the car importers were saved from the hands of a great loss. In this connection the Port authorities formed a 3 men Committee to investigate into the matter and submit a report to the Port authorities within 3 working days. Just after the fire incident with direction of Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman, Chairman of Mongla Port Authorities a 3 men investigation committee was formed headed by Md. Shamim Hawladar, Assistant Traffic Manager of Mongla Port to investigate into the matter and submit the (investigation) report to the Port Authorities within 3 working days. It was disclosed by Makruzzaman Munshi, Assistant Secretary of the Port authorities.
It is mentionable here that there are more than thousand of imported cars worth Taka several crores within the car yards in the interior of the port and in the jetty yards and if the fire could not be extinguished within a short time the both Port authorities and the car importers had to face an immeasurable loss.
It is learnt from a source of the Port authorities that there are several thousands of imported reconditioned cars of various brands in the different sheds within the interior of the Port. Out of them more than one hundred cars those were not taken delivery by the importers were already sold in auction by the Customs department of the Port and it was earlier announced that those auctioned cars will be delivered on Thursday (July 11) at noon. As per the announcement, the customers assembled at the car yards. A driver named Irfan Ullah Deepu as soon as opened the door and entered in the car its engine caught fire and within moments the fire engulfed its (car) entire body just in front of the concerned officials and the buyers. The driver confined into the car.
Being informed of the matter a fire service unit rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire within half an hour. Driver Deepu was confined within the car. He was recovered from it by the fire men and the security guards of the car yards of the Port in dying condition and sent to Mongla Port Hospital and later, he was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Driver Irfan Ullah Deepu (27), son of one Abdul Matin hails from Bakutia in Chattogram district. He was taken to Mongla Port by a buyer to drive the car from Mongla to the destination of the buyer.
