Power substation at risk in Juri
Moulvibazar Correspondent
Heavy rains over the past few days and runoff from hill slopes upstream have flooded the Power Development Board (PDB) substation in Juri, Moulvibazar, putting the building at risk. The substation is located along the Juri-Botuli customs station road in the Ranimora area of the upazila. The front road and the substation premises are inundated, with two power transformers nearly submerged. Surrounding houses are also flooded, trapping residents, some of whom have evacuated to safer areas.
Substation officials reported that water began entering the facility on Tuesday morning, and the water level has been rising steadily. The substation’s two 33/11 kilovolt transformers supply electricity to six unions in Juri Upazila, serving approximately 16,000 customers.
A team led by Superintending Engineer SM Iqbal from the Maulvibazar District Office of PDB visited the substation on Tuesday afternoon. SM Iqbal informed the media that the substation is under threat but is still operational. If the water level rises further, the transformers may become submerged, leading to a halt in power supply.
Local residents noted that the substation, commissioned in 2022, faces this issue because it was not built on elevated enough ground. A similar situation occurred during the 2022 flood.
