Bagerhat property losses soar to Tk 644cr due to Remal

After the devastating cyclone Remal accompanied with unusual tidal surges swept over the coastal districts very badly damaged the properties worth Tk.644 crores 67 lakh in 27 sectors of Bagerhat district as per the assessment done by the district administration. At the time of the cyclone a woman was killed when a big tree was uprooted and fell on her dwelling house and at least some 07 others were injured in the different places of the district during the period.
According to the information given by the district administration, the main sectors damaged badly by the cyclone Remal are — fisheries, agriculture, electricity, roads, water, forest, boats, fishing nets and trawlers, This year the cyclone damaged 4 thousand 3 hundred 45 hectares crop lands worth Tk.79 crores 85 lakh, 35 thousand fish farms were washed away, causing loss to the fish farmers worth Tk.72 crores 50 lakh. 1 (one) thousand 7 hundred 21 kilometers electricity line was damaged, As a result, REB (Rural Electrification Board suffered a loss of Tk.55 crores. Besides this, some 53 bridges and culverts on the different roads were damaged and consequently, the concerned department suffered a loss of Tk.1 cror 36 lakh. 35 kilometers
Embankment of the Water Development Board was broken. As a result, the board suffered a loss of Tk.11 crores 70 lakh. Forest lands of 105 hectares were damaged while the nursery forest lands of 12 hectares were damaged and consequently, concerned departments suffered a loss of Tk.3 crores 30 lakh and Tk.14 lakh respectively. some 9,127 ponds or natural water containers of sweet water were damaged. As a result, the concerned authorities incurred a loss of Tk.44 crores 57 Lakh. Besides this, more than 6 hundred boats and trawlers and 572 fishing nets were also damaged and consequently, the fishermen and the owners of fishing trawlers and boats incurred a loss of Tk.2 crores 42 lakh. On the other hand, 68 thousand 4 hundred 18 dwelling and other houses were badly affected by the cyclone Remal. Out of them 13 thousand 1 hundred 24 were damaged completely and some 55 thousand 2 hundred 95 were damaged partially.
Mohammad Khalid Hossain, DC, Bagerhat told, after the cyclone Remal we already prepared a list of the affected people of the district. We collected information from the different departments and sectors. The DC added, properties worth tk.644 crores 67 lakh were damage in 17 sectors of the district. Some help was already distributed among the cyclone battered people of the district to some extent. This officer added, we will try to distribute different kinds of help among the affected people subject to be sanctioned and permission of the concerned authorities.
