Young offender sentenced to life for acid assault

A court sentenced Sujan Kumar Halder (28) to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk. one lakh in a case of acid throwing to a Madhukhali housewife in Faridpur. Judge Shihabul Islam of Faridpur Additional District Sessions Judge 2nd Court gave this judgment on Thursday (May 23) afternoon. The defendant was present in court during the verdict. Convicted accused Sujan Kumar Halder is son of Sushil Kumar Halder of Beleshwar village of Madhukhali upazila.
According to the source of the case, accused Sujan has been teasing Swarasati Malo (23), wife of Chaitanya Malo of neighboring Jagannathadi Schoolpara village for a long time by proposing love.
The accused was warned not to disturb the housewife in the local court. Then the accused Sujan Kumar Halder got angry and poured acid in a bottle from behind on the evening of 16 November 2019 when Swarsati Malo was busy cooking. At that time, Swarsati’s head, face and neck were burnt by liquid acid. The injured housewife was first admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical Hospital for advanced treatment. 2 days after this incident, on November 18, Swarsati’s Vasur Krishna Malo, who was injured, filed a case against accused Sujan Kumar Halder for throwing acid at Madhukhali police station.
The police investigated the incident and arrested the accused and sent him to the district court. The inspector of Madhukhali police station accused two people of throwing acid after failing to propose love. Aminul Islam filed the charge sheet of this case in the court after almost 1 year.
Additional District Sessions Judge 2nd Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Md. Sanwar Hossain said that after the long testimony of the case, the learned judge sentenced the defendant Sujan Kumar Haldar to life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh taka under Section 5(a) of the Acid Crime Act 2002. Besides, Gautam Mandal, the other accused in that case, was acquitted as his guilt was not proved.
Later, the accused, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was sent to prison under police guard.
