PSA calls strike at DU

Progressive Student Alliance (PSA), a platform of some left leaning student organizations, on Saturday called strike at Dhaka University for Monday protesting the killing of blogger Avijit Roy.
They also demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to those who killed the blogger near the TSC in the evening of February 26.
The leaders of PSA made this demand in a press conference held at the Modhu’s Canteen on the Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday (Saturday).
President of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Convener of PSA Hasan Taraque read out the written statement at the press briefing.
Hasan Taraque said the negligence of the law enforcers on-duty in the DU area for the killing of blogger Avijit Roy in the Dhaka University area.
He condemned the failure of the law enforcers in finding out the Avijit’s killers even after three days of the killing.
He also announced countrywide three-days long programme, including strike on March 2 at DU, countrywide demonstration at 12:00pm on March 3, students and teachers’ rally at Shahbag at 3:00 pm and submission of memorandum to home ministry on March 4.
President of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Saifuzzaman Sakon, General Secretary Imran Habib Rumon, President of Chhatra Federation Saikat Mollik, Convener of Biplobi Chhatra Moitri Alamgir Kabir were present, among others, at the event.
Meanwhile, Sammilito Sangskritik Jote at a protest rally at TSC announced a day-long hunger strike at Central Shaheed Minar on March 6, demanding immediate arrest of the killers of Avijit Roy.
Speakers at the rally said that fundamental groups had been killing free-thinking people in the country continuously as they didn’t come under trial for their crimes.
Former Convener of the Jote, Nasiruddin Yousuf Bacchu, said that the anti-liberation force with the help of terrorists were killing progressive and secular minded people to make the country a terror-state.
The killing of blogger Avijit Roy was a part of their mission, but it was the responsibility of the government to trace out the killers and give them highest punishment,’ he said.
‘If the government fail to punish the real killers of Avijit, we will not be safe from them,’ he said.
Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique said that Avijit Roy was friend of the Liberation War, Language Movement and progressive power of the country.
Chaired by president of the Jote Golam Quddus, the rally was also addressed by DU teacher Anwar Hossain, General Secretary of the Jote Hasan Arif, prominent dramatist Mamunur Rasid.
They said that Avijit’s body would be kept at Aparajeya Bangla on the Dhaka University campus for two hours from 10:00am today (Sunday) for mourners to have a glimpse and pay their last respect to the slain writer. They also announced that the body will be handed over to the Dhaka Medical College for research work.
Earlier, activists of the platform, combined of four student organizations, brought out a procession on the campus wearing black badges.
